Topic Speaker for October:
James Nieh, Principal Investigator, and another Researcher from the UC San Diego Nieh Bee Lab will present ongoing studies.  

Note: We are endeavoring to support research in our area. Cal Poly Pomona, UC San Diego, UC Riverside and UC “Bee Campus”Channel Islands all have honey bee programs and we are supporting these programs by inviting them to present experiments and findings at our meetings and giving scholarships/donations to further their research.

First/Second year beekeeping - 7 minute Speaker

Cindy will give us a fireside chat. How you got into beekeeping and on the mistakes made, the trials, tribulations, problems of their first two years of beekeeping.

Topic Speaker

Michele Colopy is the program director for the Pollinator Stewardship Council whose mission is to defend managed and native pollinators vital to a sustainable and affordable food supply from the adverse impact of pesticides. She will be addressing tonight Migratory Beekeeping and why keeping them alive is so difficult.

Packages

How are the new package bees looking? Does anyone have A package with drawn comb and a package on foundation…to see the difference.

April 25th it’s been 39 days so new bees coming out for some 18 days?

How many bees do you see in the hive? When you open, how many frames are covered with bees. 8 frames? Is when you’ll add another box? What’s your plan? Swarm control? Treat?

First/Second year beekeeping - Speaker (7 minutes)
A selected beekeeper, Murry, to speak on how they got into beekeeping and their first two years of beekeeping. Specifically, on the mistakes made, the trials, tribulations, problems.

Reading the frames.  What you can tell about your bees from the clues on the frame.

I have a request.  Someone to go along to a community meeting about beekeepers and their pesky bees in the area.  I want some one to buffer me (and maybe me them) when I explain the beekeeping ordinance legalizing bees and how homeowners can move neighbors to comply with the ordinance. (Get the state apiary inspector’s number) explain bees foraging

Beekeeping 101: Keith Roberts. How did bee class go and what’s in the next class

Upcoming events:

  • Eaton canyon nature center is having a one-day event.  June 2nd.   Educate.  Observation hive sell honey. Partner with BASC.  Who will bring an observation hive?  We have honey 50 bears (?more bears?) and sticks  and sample spoons.  Need banner & pamphlets

  • Elray  Bennett’s honey Farm event. May be a donation to our club is in order for showing up and manning the train from Bennett’s

LA County Fair: Cindy Caldera

Upcoming Talk: Michele Colopy Pollinator Stewardship June 3rd  talk on Migratory beekeeping and why it is so hard to keep bees alive.

How can you increase the production of propolis in your colonies which will increase the health of the hive.  Propolis trap on the walls, saw cutting rips into the walls or roughing up walls with steel brush. 

What do you see, what are you doing this time of year?  Swarms?

When: Sunday, March 10, 2019**

Location:  The Valley Hive 
                  10538 Topanga Canyon Blvd.
                  Chatsworth, CA 91311

Parking for Class:  Please park on Topanga Canyon Blvd.  No parking restrictions on Sundays.

Time:  Gates and Check in open @ 8:30am.  Class Starts @ 9am and will run until Noon.

Class Requirements: 

  • You must have a paid 2019 LACBA Membership

  • Bring a notebook and pen/pencil to take notes

  • Seating is limited. If you want a chair you should bring one with you

  • Positive attitude with a willingness to learn!

Price:  This class is free! (Suggested donation of $20 per person per class or $100 for all 8 classes. LACBA is a 501c3, your donation is tax deductible.)

Class Topic:  What to plant in a bee friendly garden. The importance of well-built hive equipment.  How to build/assemble your own Hive Equipment.  The life cycle of the colony and basic bee biology.  How to install a package or nuc of bees into your equipment.

On the Agenda:

  • Learn about LACBA committees and how you can participate.

  • Beginning with the Committee Meeting, we will be discussing our upcoming Beekeeping Class 101: Class size, instructors, class fee, etc. BRING YOUR IDEAS!

  • An experienced beekeeper will share on how they got into beekeeping and what went on in their first two years of beekeeping. Specifically focusing on mistakes made, the trials, tribulations, problems.

  • Bill Lewis will present an informative tribute to photojournalist and bee photographer, Kodua Galieti, utilizing her extraordinary photographs to show what goes on inside a beehive and the various stages of honey bee development. Long time beekeepers and new-bees are sure to find the presentation fascinating.

  • We’re hoping all those who attended the CSBA Convention will share a short report on what you found most interesting, informative, entertaining - something you can share with the rest of us. Thank you!

  • Presentation of the 2018 Golden Hive Tool Award.
