Happy National Honey Bee Day - August 19, 2017

The Bee Gardener    By Christine Casey   August 18, 2017

This Saturday, August 19, 2017, is National Honey Bee Day. This commemoration was created by Pennsylvania beekeepers to recognize the beekeeping industry, honey bees, and the role they play in our food supply. Let's take this opportunity to honor the hard-working honey bees (they pollinate about 85% of bee-pollinated crops in the US, which is worth billions of dollars annually).

To keep honey bees healthy, access to ample, nutritious forage, i.e. flowers, is essential. It's important to provide year-round bloom and to include both pollen and nectar sources. The Haven's web page includes the information you need to develop this in your own garden...

Happy National Honey Bee Day!

Due to the important role honey bees play in our agricultural economy and food system, Secretary of Agriculture, Thomas J. Vilsack proclaimed August 22, 2015 as National Honey Bee Day.
Check out this cool video video about the USDA rooftop honey harvest.

The process is shown from pollinator plants, to bees and the colonies in the rooftop apiary on the U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarter building in Washington, D.C. The honey is harvested from the colony, extracted, packaged and delivered to Secretary Tom Vilsack for use in his office, when talking about the importance of pollinators and at public awareness events. *Joining HoneyLove in their National Honey Bee Day Party and Pot Luck at Venice Beach from 10AM-2PM.  Group Photo is at Noon. https://www.facebook.com/events/238793076320330/

*Learning about bees at LACBA Beekeeping Class 101 Sunday, August 17, at Bill's Bees Bee Yard, 9am-Noon. http://www.losangelescountybeekeepers.com/beekeeping-classes-losangeles/

*Caring for honey bees in their own bee/back yard by providing pesticide free, bee-friendly plants and a clean water source.

May you Enjoy a Beautiful Honey Bee Day!

Celebrate the Bees on National Honey Bee Day

Bug Squad - Happenings in the Insect World      By Kathy Keatley Garvey    August 15, 2014

If you appreciate honey bees--particularly their pollination services--then you should thank them.

Not just on National Honey Bee Day, which is Saturday, Aug. 16, but every day.

This year's theme is “Sustainable Gardening Begins with Honey  Bees.”

Some grassroots-minded beekeepers established the day in 2009 "to build community awareness of the bee industry, through education and promotion," according to their website. "Our commitment is to continue that philosophy."

"Oh, but I'm just one person!" you say. The NHBD's response to that is a quote from Edmund Burke (1729-1797): "No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little."

Here's what we did: We removed our lawn: no lawnmower, no edger, no lawn. Our garden is a bee garden.  We planted lavender, artichokes (and let them flower), catmint, alyssum, cilantro, cosmos, tower of jewels, zinnias, guara, blanketflowers (Gallardia) sunflowers, Mexican sunflower (Tithonia), lantana, California golden poppies, honeysuckle, salvia, oregano, African blue basil, sedum, peach, tangerine, pomegranate, lemon and other bee favorites. A drip irrigation grid system, timed to turn on at 4 in the morning,  keeps the plants healthy, and the nectar and pollen flowing. It's a veritable oasis. It's a welcome mat. It's a pool of floral resources. C'mon in, the flowers are fine!

It's also important to select seasonal plants, especially for late summer and fall, when food resources are scarce. Avoid pesticides. Buy local honey. Support the bees. Support the beekeepers.  Become a beekeeper or let beekeepers maintain their hives on your property, if you can.

Get involved with bees!

If you're like me, you love to photograph them. I can sit for hours in our bee garden and just watch them go about their bees-ness.  Here are several of my favorite images:
