Looking ahead to another season it’s always interesting to start polling where beekeepers are sourcing their colonies. Our WordCloud for the week starts to give us a hint…there’s a lot of locally raised nuc and queen producers building followings in their communities! With packages hovering around $200 this year in some places it makes a lot of sense to make your own bees with your neighbors. For a great talk on the “Sustainable Apiary” check out this video by acclaimed beekeeper Mike Palmer. I just saw Mike give this talk at the Chester County Beekeeper Conference and it was fantastic. Make sure to take a look!

Winter is upon us and beekeepers across the nation are getting ready! Based on our list of suggested questions we saw a lot of interest in winter preparation so we added a few questions to the survey to dive down into what folks were up to. Across the board, beekeepers are certainly getting ready but it seems from comments few beekeepers are actually wrapping or insulating their hives just yet.
